Ingredients
- 2 1/2 cups cake flour
- 2 1/2 tsp baking powder
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp nutmeg
- 1/4 tsp allspice
- 3/4 cup shortening or butter
- 3/4 cup milk
- 1 tsp vanilla
- 1 2/3 cup brown sugar
- 3 eggs (unbeaten)
- Frosting:
- 1/2 cup butter or margarine
- 1/6 tsp salt
- 3 1/2 cups sifted powdered sugar
- 2 egg yolks
- 1 tsp grated lemon rind
- milk
Steps
- Stir shortening until soft. Add sifted dry ingredients and blend.
- Mix in brown sugar that has lumps removed.
- Add milk and mix the flour until dampened. Beat 2 minutes (150 strokes to a minutes).
- Add eggs, beat 1 more minute.
- Bake 375° for 30 minutes. Spread buttercream frosting between layers on top.
- Frosting:
- Cream butter/margarine. Add salt and powdered sugar. Gradually blending as it is added. Add egg yolks, lemon zest, and enough milk to make spreading consistency.
- Decorate outside with almond halves.
