Combine sugar, syrup, salt and water in saucepan. Stir over low heat until sugar dissolves.
Cook without stirring; then, test for hard ball stage.
Remove from heat. Beat egg whites until stiff peaks are formed.
Add syrup mixture in a thin stream while beating. Add vanilla.
Continue beating until peaks hold shape.
Spread on cake.
Decorate with coconut, chopped nuts, or dandies as desired
Tips
For the center layer of cake - to 1/3 of frosting add 1/4 cup cherries, 1/4 cup raisins or figs, 1/3 cup chopped nuts, 1 tsp grated orange or lemon rind, and 1 tsp juice of either. Spread between layers of cake.
