Excellent White Bread

Ingredients
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 3 TBSP sugar
  • 2 tsp salt
  • 3 TBSP shortening
  • 1 1/2 cup warm water
  • 1 yeast cake
  • 5 1/2 cup flour (approx.)

Steps
  1. Scald milk, stir in sugar, salt and shortening. Cool to lukewarm. Dissolve yeast in warm water. Then add milk mixture and 3 cups flour.
  2. Beat until smooth. Add more flour to make a soft dough.
  3. Knead until smooth and elastic, about 8-10 minutes.
  4. Form into smooth ball and grease top. Cover and let rise until doubled in bulk (about 1 hour).
  5. Punch down - let rest 15 minutes. Divide dough in half.
  6. Shape into loaves and place in greased bread pans.
  7. Cover, let rise - about 1 1/2 hours.
  8. Bake 400° about 30 minutes.
  9. Remove from pans and cool.
Tips
I always brush the tops with margarine as it makes a softer crust.
Makes an excellent scone dough.
I always double the recipe!
