Buttermilk Doughnuts

Ingredients
2 cups buttermilk
2 eggs (beaten)
1 cup sugar
5 cups sifted flour
2 tsp soda
1 tsp baking powder
1 tsp salt
1 tsp nutmeg
1/4 cup melted butter or shortening

Steps
Combine buttermilk, eggs and sugar; blend well.
Beat in sifted dry ingredients. Then stir in melted butter.
Roll dough out on floured board about 1/4" thick.
Cut with doughnut cutter.
Fry in hot fat (375°) until golden brown on both sides.
Drain and sprinkle with sugar if desired. Can also glaze with thin powdered sugar and vanilla or frosting.
