Buttermilk Doughnuts

Ingredients
  • 2 cups buttermilk
  • 2 eggs (beaten)
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 5 cups sifted flour
  • 2 tsp soda
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp nutmeg
  • 1/4 cup melted butter or shortening

Steps
  1. Combine buttermilk, eggs and sugar; blend well.
  2. Beat in sifted dry ingredients. Then stir in melted butter.
  3. Roll dough out on floured board about 1/4" thick.
  4. Cut with doughnut cutter.
  5. Fry in hot fat (375°) until golden brown on both sides.
  6. Drain and sprinkle with sugar if desired. Can also glaze with thin powdered sugar and vanilla or frosting.
