Ingredients
- 2 cups sugar
- 1/2 cup margarine
- 4 cups apples (grated)
- 2 cups flour
- 2 eggs
- 2 tsp soda
- 2 tsp cinnamon
- 1 tsp nutmeg
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/2 cup walnuts (optional)
- Sauce:
- 1/2 cup butter
- 1 cup sugar
- 1/2 cup light cream or evaporated milk
- 1/2 tsp vanilla
- dash nutmeg
Steps
- Cream margarine and sugar. Add eggs and blend.
- Peel, core, and grate apples. Stire into creamed mixture.
- Stir in dry ingredients, add chopped walnuts.
- Pour into 2 square 8" or 1 9x13" pan - greased.
- Bake for 45 minutes at 350°.
- For sauce: Combine ingredients together and cook over low eat for 12-15 minutes until thickened. Stir constantly.
- Spoon warm sauce over cake and serve.
